Wick remains on fire; Spikes win

STATE COLLEGE – Rowan Wick smashed his New York-Penn League-leading fifth home run of the season, and Luis Perdomo’s six sparkling innings fueled a Spikes shutout of the Batavia Muckdogs, 8-0, on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Wick collected three hits total on the night, with his solo home run to the right field bleachers in the second inning setting the tone for a dominant offensive performance by the Spikes (4-1). The 2012 ninth-round draft choice also totaled a pair of RBI during his 3-for-4 night, running his total in that column to a league-leading nine through five games.

Perdomo (1-0) made the longest outing for a Spikes pitcher so far this season, logging six innings and scattering six hits while striking out six batters. The righthander’s only trouble was in the second inning, when he elicited two quick pop-ups to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam.

Jeff Barkley, Kyle Grana and Trey Nielsen followed Perdomo by each tossing a scoreless inning to preserve State College’s first shutout win of the season.

Robelys Reyes contributed a two-run single in the eighth inning to complete the scoring. Adam Ehrilch scored twice for State College as well.

Batavia (3-2) starter Yeims Mendoza (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks over three-plus innings of work. Mendoza struck out one in the effort.

Luis Alberto Sanz went 3-for-4 for the Muckdogs, while Carlos Duran also put together multiple hits to help the Batavia offense. All eight of the Muckdogs’ hits as a team were singles.

Batavia also committed four errors in the game. With the win, the Spikes now take sole possession of the NYPL Pinckney Division lead shared by both teams entering the game.

Wednesday night, State College and Batavia play the second game of their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will pit Spikes right-hander Will Anderson (0-0), making his first start of the year, against Muckdogs right-hander Andy Beltre (0-0).

The Spikes bring the flavor of the soccer pitch to the ballpark on World Soccer Night to celebrate the current action in Brazil. First pitch will be at 7:05.
