Spikes, Aberdeen called, cancelled
ABERDEEN, Md. – Friday night’s game at Ripken Stadium between the State College Spikes and Aberdeen IronBirds was officially suspended in the bottom of the third inning due to rain. There are no plans to resume the game, as it was the last scheduled meeting between the Spikes and IronBirds in the 2013 season.
State College was trailing Aberdeen, 6-1, when the game was stopped. The first pitch was delayed 45 minutes at the outset due to rain throughout the day in Aberdeen.
Mitch Harris had just thrown the second pitch of the bottom of the third inning when the game was halted for a second rain delay.
No statistics from the game will be official. Manny Hernandez had driven in four runs with a pair of doubles for the IronBirds. Juan Bautista had allowed six runs, five of them earned, on six hits and two walks, over two innings of work. Steven Ramos contributed the only Spikes run with an RBI single.
State College now heads to Fishkill, N.Y., where it will begin a three-game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) tonight. The 7:05 p.m. matchup at Dutchess Stadium is set to feature right-hander Kevin Herget (3-0) starting on the mound for the Spikes as the first pitcher in a “piggyback” setup. Left-hander Chase Brookshire (0-0) is scheduled to make his second pro appearance as the next man in for State College.
