Notes of the tournament trail

Mifflin County now has won two state titles in Williamsport: The most recent one and the 2007 13-year-old title. Mifflin County’s record in Williamsport is now 38-22.

Mifflin County’s record at Armagh Memorial Field in Milroy is 254-55. It has played two Mid-Atlantic regionals in Milroy and has a record of 6-2.

Mifflin County’s record for opening games in the Mid-Atlantic is 16-8 and for the 15-year-olds is 8-4.

Justin Yoder, the Mifflin County manager, now has a 14-1 overall record as an all-star manager. He has become the 15th Mifflin County manager to get at least 10 or more wins on the all-star tournament trail. The all time leader is the late Fred Zook, who had a 102-38 mark.

McVeytown’s Brian Yetter was the winning pitcher in the state championship game. Yetter becomes the fourth pitcher and the fifth from McVeytown to win a state title game. The other McVeytown pitchers were Jim Allgyer, 1960 (14-15-year-olds); Wade Fagan, 2003 (13-year-olds); Ben Allen, 2003 (15-year-olds); and Yetter in 2016 (13-year-olds). McVeytown is now tied with Belltown for with five hurlers who have won state title games for Mifflin County. Strodes Mills is third with four.

This will be Mifflin County’s 26th appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the top number in Pennsylvania. Right behind Mifflin County are West End, 17; Drexel Hill, 16; Phoenixville, 15; Levittown, 13; State College and Broomall-Newtown, 12 each.

Three leagues have won the Babe Ruth national title at the 13-year-old level in Pennsylvania and none of them have come back to win in the 14-year-old bracket. Levittown won in 2002 and was knocked out by Mifflin Country. In 2014, Broomall-Newtown won then fell to West End. In 2016, Mifflin County won and also lost to West End. However, both Broomall and Mifflin County came back and won state titles at the 15-year-old level.

Mifflin County’s record by month is June, 39-5; July, 575-233 and August, 69-61.

Mifflin County is the first league in Pennsylvania to win the 15-year-old bracket in back-to-back years three times. Mifflin County did it in 2002-03; 2017-18 and 2007-09.
