LEWISTOWN — The State College dynamic duo were too much for Mifflin County to overcome on Friday evening at Mitchell Field.

Isaiah Edwards and Dresyn Green combined for 214 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in a 42-6 victory over the Huskies.

The game boiled down to a case of too much size and too much speed for Mifflin County to overcome.

“They have speed all over the field. It’s a good group of kids. They have a lot of talent on that side of the ball. We knew coming in what we were up against,” Mifflin County coach Scot Sechler said. “It’s tough to simulate that kind of speed in practice. We tried our best but at the end of the day they are the eighth-ranked team in the state for a reason.”

Green ran for 114 yards and two scores in one half of play. Edwards added 75 yards rushing and one score along with three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown to pace State College.

State College scored just under two minutes to start the game when Brady Dorner took the QB draw 11 yards to paydirt. Edwards set things up with a 55-yard punt return to put the ball on the Husky 35.

The Little Lions, known for their big-play offense, put on a show on their next drive when Edwards burst through the line and took off for a 71-yard score with 9:08 left in the first.

State College made it three touchdowns in the first quarter when Dorner rolled to his left and hit a streaking Nehemiah Howell down the sidelines for the 57-yard score. The PAT by Aiden Spitler made it 21-0 with 3:01 left.

The returning District 6 Class 6A champions upped the lead to 35-0 at the half with to scores in the second quarter. Green squeezed his way through the hole, got by the contain, and scampered 77 yards up the middle to daylight. Green ended the first half with a two-yard score and put the mercy rule in effect for the second half.

Despite the lop-sided victory. State College coach Matt Lintal, now 48-18 in his tenure, likes what he sees in the Huskies.

“We are going to win ball games down the road here. Coach (Matt) Lintal said after the game we were well-coached and we are going to win some games and wished us luck the rest of the year,” Sechler said.

The Huskies committed one penalty and had zero turnovers in the contest.

“We played a very clean game. We made a lot of mental errors, missed blocks, missed throws, not seeing the open receivers. Once we clean that up we should be fine,” Sechler said.

Mifflin County came out with a never-say-die attitude and didn’t concede a thing. Sechler inserted converted guard Rodney Henry in at fullback and the offense opened up some holes on the team’s lone scoring drive of the game.

The Huskies marched on a 12-play 57-yard drive in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout. Henry opened up holes for tailback Gage Schaeffer with solid blocking. He carried the ball three times for 16 yards on the drive.

“We moved Rodney from right guard to fullback after Nathan (Poche) left and he loves the transition,” Sechler said. “We told him tonight if he didn’t get the first down (on the scoring drive). He’d be moved back to guard. Guess what? He got the first down.”

Schaeffer led the offense with 51 yards on 18 carries, including a 27-yard TD with 8:21 left in the game.

Another bright spot was the play of Brycen Hassinger. The junior lined up at tailback, quarterback, linebacker, defensive end, punter and safety. He finished with 38 yards rushing and led the defense with four tackles.

“Brycen is a tremendous kid who works hard. He has a ton of talent and he got bigger from last year. I said Brycen is going to have a monster year,” Sechler said.

Sechler knows he won’t see a team like State College the rest of the season. He said the team is ready to move on and learn from its mistakes.

“They are an elite team and that’s what we are striving to be,” Sechler said. “We’re not there yet. We need to do a better job coaching. We need to do a better job executing and game planning. This game is in the past, we can’t change it at this point. All we can do is learn from it and get better.”

Mifflin County hits the road Aug. 30 with a non-conference game at Hollidaysburg.
