Posey lifts?Trojans to victory

MOUNT UNION– Mount Union took advantage of its opportunities in the bottom of the fifth inning leading to a 5-1 victory over Claysburg-Kimmel in an Inter-County Conference baseball game on Thursday.

“It’s great to get a win,” Trojans coach Tim Hicks said.

The Trojans had the bases loaded in the bottom half of the fifth with the score tied at one apiece and Quinton Posey at the plate. Posey then launched one into the outfield, driving in two runs to give the Trojans the lead.

Tyler Renninger took the mound for Mount Union going six innings. Dylan Gearhart who struck out the side in his one inning of work.

“Pitching was outstanding,” Hicks said. “Tyler Renninger doesn’t walk many guys, puts the ball in play and our defense made plays behind him.”

Mount Union (3-0, 3-0) travels to Hollidaysburg today.

Baseball

Central Columbia 11, Midd-West 0 (5 inn.)

BLOOMSBURG — Midd-West struggled to contain the Central Columbia offense in its 11-0 loss in a Heartland Conference baseball game Thursday.

Logan Rager, Marc Piccioni, Brayden Swineford and Cade Crossgrove each had a hit for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs also used four different pitchers who pitched an inning each and combined for four strikeouts and four walks.

Midd-West travels to Mifflinburg Monday.

Track and field

Boys: Big Spring 99.5, Greenwood 50.5

Girls: Greenwood 118, Big Spring 32

NEWVILLE — Greenwood spilt its track and field meet with Big Spring as the girls won 118-32 while the boys lost 99 1/2-50 1/2 on Thursday.

For the girls, the Wildcats scored first place in all but one event of the meet. Sam Schreiber led the way with four victories while Sophia Shoemaker, Peyton Wirth, Amiyah Priebe all had three first-place finishes. Mallory Kauffman set school records in discus and shot put throwing 46 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the latter and 155-1 in discus.

On the boys side Greenwood only had four first-place finishes winning the 3,200-meter relay. Mitch Kauffman won the discus and Steven Watts won the high jump.

Greenwood hosts East Juniata Tuesday.

Boys: Southern Fulton 101, Mount Union 49

Girls: Southern Fulton 114, Mount Union 36

THREE SPRINGS — Both the Mount Union boys and girls struggled against Southern Fulton with the boys losing 101-49 while girls fell 114-36 in an Inter-County Conference track and field meet Thursday.

“Southern Fulton is an extremely excellent team,” Trojans coach Bob Wydock said. “I was pleased with our team be cause we improved from Tuesday’s meet.”

The Trojans scored three first place finishes in the boys meet with Zachary Coder winning the javelin for the second time in as many attempts throwing 133-1, a new personal best. Trevor Skopic won the 800-meter run and the Trojans took first place in the 4×100-meter relay.

For the girls Emily Boozel scored the only two first-place finishes for Mount Union winning both the discus and javelin.

Mount Union travels to Juniata Valley Tuesday.

Softball

Newport 11, Greenwood 3

MILLERSTOWN — Greenwood fell behind in the third inning and never recovered in an 11-3 loss to Newport in a Tri-Valley League softball game.

The Wildcats and Buffaloes were tied at two apiece until the bottom of the third inning when Newport scored four runs in the frame.

Mary Gantt went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI for the Wildcats.

Greenwood travels to Halifax Monday.

Central Columbia 4, Midd-West 1

BLOOMSBURG — Midd-West struggled against Mea Consentino in its 4-1 loss to Central Columbia in a Heartland Conference softball game Thursday.

Consentino pitched all seven innings striking out 17 batters while walking only three. Consentino caused trouble with her bat too as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.

Marlo Spriggle drove in the lone run for the Mustangs.

Midd-West hosts Lewisburg Tuesday.
