Tiger girls tame Newport

COCOLAMUS — East Juniata drove a truck through Newport’s defense, handing the Buffaloes a 59-16 loss in a Tri-Valley League girls basketball game Saturday.

Contributing to the mercy-rule margin were three double-digit scorers. Clarye Guyer outscored Newport herself with 18 points, including five 3-pointers — four of those in the opening half. Alyssa Robinson scored 16 with four from downtown. Alyssa Hibbs added 14.

Centre County Christian 23, Belleville Mennonite 21

BELLEVILLE — A strong fourth quarter by Belleville Mennonite wasn’t enough for the Thunder to overcome Centre County Christian’s earlier success as the visitors edged the Thunder 23-21 in a nonleague girls basketball game Saturday.

Olivia Yoder led the Thunder with nine points, including her team’s only three and all four of its successful free throws.

MILLERSTOWN — Alli Walton and Abby Taylor scored 14 apiece, leading a quarter of Wildcats in double figures as Greenwood ripped Millersburg, 56-24, in Tri-Valley League girls basketball Saturday.

“Four girls in double figures is always a good sign,” Greenwood coach Jeff Deitz said. “Our transition game really worked well tonight. Our defense also deserves about if credit holding them to 12 points through three quarters,” including a one-point fourth.

Alli Crockett and Kenedy Stroup added 10 each.

Greenwood (17-3, 13-1) travels to Susquenita today.

MONTOURSVILLE — Josue Rodriguez scored 12 but Midd-West needed a lot more. Montoursville doubled down on the Mustangs Saturday, 66-33, in Heartland Conference boys basketball.

Stefan Leitzel has seven rebounds and four steals for Midd-West.

The Warriors also won the JV game, 55-27.

The Mustangs (4-15, 0-9) travel to Loyalsock Wednesday.

Girls: Altoona 102, Mifflin County 60

Boys: Altoona 121, Mifflin County 25

ALTOONA — Ella Stuck and Macy Becker each had two individual firsts and Mifflin County’s girls had two more in a 106-60 loss to Altoona in a nonleague swim meet Saturday.

The boys were held to a handful of thirds as Altoona won their meet 121-25.

Becker won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Stuck had her wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breast stroke.

Massie Baisey had the other individual first in the 100 backstroke. The three of them, along with Jordyn Kyle, won the 200 medley relay.

Rally in the Valley

LANCASTER — Midd-West flattened Annville-Cleona with eight falls — seven of them in the first period — and a tech in a 62-18 victory Saturday during the Rally in the Valley at Conestoga Valley.

The Mustangs had three quick ones and got a win by disqualification against the host at the same event.
