State College defeats Huskies

STATE COLLEGE — To be the best you have to beat the best.

Tuesday night, the Mifflin County swim team tried to do that as it went head-to-head with defending District 6 champion State College.

With a bunch of young and fresh faces on this year’s Huskies’ roster, the team used the match up against the Little Lions as a measuring stick to see where it is at this point — still early — in the season.

Both the boys (149-22) and the girls (131-44) lost in the contest to the district’s standard bearer.

Despite the loss, Mifflin County coach Gretchen Seyler was happy about the individual efforts that her team provided Tuesday.

“I have four senior girls that I’m going to be saying goodbye to at the end of this year. But I also have a lot of young girls too and thats promising because that means we will have a pretty strong girls team. The boys side we have a lot of new faces. We have some that have never swam before,” Seyler said. “I thought that was a great performance by everyone. I told them tonight that the goal for tonight was no DQs and we did just that. They all swam well and did their best. I told them State College is tough, especially in a dual meet and you’re going to be pushed and some will see some very strong finishes.”

On the girls’ side, the Huskies were led by Ella Stuck, who took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:59.48. Stuck also placed a solid second with a time of 28.12 in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Huskies also got a first and third in the 100-yard freestyle. Hannah Bonson topped it off with a time of 58.33. Placing third was Rebecca Montgomery with a time of 1:33.65.

Others placing third were Macy Becker in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:22.23; Ethan Andrews placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.24 and rounding out the third place finishers was the girls 400-yard freestyle relay team with a time of 4:09.63.

Stuck, Robinette and Andrews swam district-qualifying times in individual events.
