Regional teams are set for the start of the winter sports season

The winter sports season gets underway tonight with a number of the region’s teams getting in on the act.

Mifflin County’s girls basketball team will look to get to the District 6 Class 6A championship game and try to change its fortunes, having missed state qualification in each of the last two.

That journey begins in the Columbia Tip-off Tournament where it will play Big Spring at 6 p.m. The night cap will be Columbia taking on Schuykill Valley and will pick up again on Saturday.

The boys team will host Red Lion tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The Huskies wrestling team will compete in the Warwick Duals Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. with the likes of Warwick, Archbishop Wood, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township, Strath Haven, West Chester Rustin and West Perry.

Mifflin County’s opening weekend concludes with its swim team traveling to Central Columbia in Bloomsburg for the Blue Jay Invitational.

Both of the Juniata County girls basketball teams will partake in the Juniata County Tip-Off Challenge. East Juniata hosts Southern Huntington tonight — and it’s the Tigers’ homecoming — and Juniata hosting Bellefonte. Both games will be played at 7 p.m.

The two will then switch opponents with the Tigers hosting Bellefonte at 12:30 p.m. Saturday before the Indians play Southern Huntingdon at 7 p.m., again each in their home gyms.

The Indian boys will see a familiar foe as they travel to the Southern Huntingdon Tournament. Juniata will play the home team tonight at 7:45. Mount Union boys will also be present at the tournament, playing Philipsburg-Osceola in the opener at 6 p.m.

The Indians and Trojans potentially set up a rematch Saturday of last year’s District 6 Class 3A tournament game where Mount Union defeated in Mifflintown.

For that to happen, both teams either have to win or lose on Friday as he tournament will continue into Saturday. The consolation game scheduled for 6 p.m. and the championship game at 7:45 p.m.

The Trojans’ wrestling team will open the season Saturday at the Mountaineer Tournament in Philipsburg starting at 9 a.m.

Other participants include Harbor Creek, Marion Center, Philipsburg-Osceola, Punxsutawney and Wyoming Seminary.

The Midd-West girls have a home game tonight against Mifflinburg at 7:30 p.m. while the boys travel to Shikellamy for its Tip-Off Tournament.

The Mustangs will be the final game tonight against Shikellamy at 7:30 p.m. The tournament will continue into Saturday with Line Mountain and Wyomissing also in on the fun.

Midd-West’s wrestling team will also be competing in the Newport Duals tonight at 5 p.m. where it compete against Newport, Camp Hill, Fairfield, Halifax, Octorara, District 3’s Trinity and York Suburban.
