Locals have success at invitational

GETTYSBURG — Mifflin County’s Brayden Harris outlasted 199 other runners to win the Gettysburg Invitational and the Huskies took fifth in the team standings Saturday.

Mifflin County finished with 189 points.

Juniata’s Garrett Baublitz finished runner-up and helped Juniata take 17th with 415 team points.

Joy Galbraith finished 15th and helped the Huskies place 12th out of 22 teams with 308 points in the girls race.

Keirstyn Burch had the best day for Greenwood as it finished 19th with 467 points.

Harris won the event in 16 minutes, 22.5 seconds.

His timing was nearly six seconds better than Indians’ Garrett Baublitz (16:28).

“The race was challenging due to the mud, but despite the conditions, not only me, but Garrett Baublitz, (teammates) Chase Sheaffer and Chayce Macknair still pulled out good performances,” Harris said. “It was nice running against fellow athletes who helped push me throughout the race. We pushed each other to be our best. We bring out the best in each other.”

Macknair placed fourth (16:43.4) to give the Huskies a pair of top-five finishers while Sheaffer finished 15th (17:36.3).

Galbraith’s finished the race in 20:53.7 while teammate Lauren Kuykendall finished in the top 30 in 21:43.

“Despite the muddy slip and slide in the first mile, Joy Galbraith medaled,” Mifflin County coach Jenn Freed said. “The girls recovered nicely from a rough week and ran well. I can’t ask them to work harder than they already do.”

Greenwood’s Burch finished 53rd out of 161 runners in the girls’ race with a time of 22:35.2. Her teammate Rachel Peters was less than a behind Burch’s timing and placed 72nd in 23:02.1.

Juniata and Greenwood will both compete in the Tri-Valley League Championships Tuesday while Mifflin County gets a week’s worth of rest before running in the Mid-Penn Championships Saturday.
