MOUNT UNION — Tussey Mountain’s defense made a major impact on their Inter-County Conference game againt Mount Union on Friday night.

The Titans jumped on the Trojans for 23 unanswered points in the first half and then backed it up in the second half with 22 more while holding the Trojans to just one score in the third quarter.

After the 45-7 loss, the Trojans are off to a rough start in the season at 0-3 while the Titans start the season at 3-0.

“The defense played well for us tonight,” Titan coach Anthony Sottasante said. “We work hard on special teams and it paid off for us tonight. We still have a long way to go as a team with a focus on executing the offense better. The team is getting better every week that we come out and play. They are doing very well with a new scheme and the 3-0 shows that we are making some changes in the program.”

In the first quarter the Titans scored one touchdown after both teams went through the initial series of downs with the Trojans being stopped on a penalty, forcing them to punt. The Titans took over on their own 20-yard line. Matt Leonard hit Tyler Rhodes on a sideline pass and he took it 80-yards for the touchdown with 5:03 on the clock. Havard Straumsheim kicked the point after to make it a 7-0 game at the end of the quarter.

The Titans offense started to move the ball in the second quarter. On their first possession in the quarter they drove from the 47-yard line and ended with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Leonard to Brady Villa. Straumsheim kicked the point after.

On the next series the Trojans started on the 25-yard line and with penalties ended up on the 5. A bad snap recovered by Nickolas Brumbaugh in the end zone put six more points on the board for the Titans. Straumsheim kicked the point after with 7:35 on the clock.

On the next series of downs for the Trojans they could not get the offense moving and had to punt. The punt was blocked by Brumbaugh and the Titans picked up a safetywith 5:18 on the game clock. Both teams went through the next series of downs without getting the offense rolling; at the end of the quarter the Titans tried a field goal from the 10-yard line that went wide and went into intermission with a 23-0 lead.

Early in the third quarter on the Trojans’ first possession Tussey Mountain’s Damon Lemin got to a Trojan punt and blocked it out of the back of the end zone for a safety with 10 minutes showing. The Titans turned the safety into another score when the Titans pounded the ball down to the Trojans 10-yard line and Kaden Lucko ran it in from 10-yards out around the right side.

Brock Woodward returned the kickoff for the Trojans to midfield giving them some working room. In eight plays the Trojans picked up a first down and were fourth and 13-yards to go when Quinton Posey rolled right and found Blake Woodward in the end zone, pulling the touchdown in coverage. Trevor Skopic kicked the point after.

The Trojans kicked off and the Titans marched down field. With 40 seconds left in the third quarter and the ball now on the one-yard line Cole Weist ran it in from one yard out for the touchdown. The Titans had a bad snap and the run failed with them taking a 38-7 margin into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter Villa picked off a Posey pass to get the ball back in the Titans hands. The Titans drove the ball down field to the 4-yard line. Weist ran the ball in from four yards out for the last score of the game.

“We need to work on special teams and we had players playing for injured players — that really hurt us tonight,” Trojan coach Jaime Brumbaugh said. “We are banged up and do not have the depth the compensate for that. Tussey Mountain plays as a team. We need a little more concentration on offense. We just need to get healthy.”
