Tigers slam Blackhawks

COVE — Roman Smith carried East Juniata past Susquenita for a 7-1 victory in a Tri-Valley League boys soccer game on Thursday.

After Susquenita scored the first goal of the game, the Tigers answered with scoring seven straight. Smith scored four goals for the Tigers, two goals in each half of the game.

East Juniata hosts Millersburg Tuesday.

Boys soccer

Greenwood 5, Millersburg 0

MILLERSBURG — Greenwood’s potent offense was too much for Millersburg in a 5-0 win in Tri-Valley League boys soccer Thursday afternoon

Five different players — Andy Loy, Luke Myers, Glenn Rice, Tyler Shomper and Isaac Myers — scored a goal for the Wildcats.

The game was called early due to poor field conditions.

Greenwood (10-0, 8-0) hosts Halifax Saturday.

MIDDLEBURG — Carter Knepp had a hat trick and assisted on two more goals in Midd-West’s 7-0 win over Shamokin in Heartland Conference boys soccer Thursday afternoon.

Nic Eppley and Evan Eppley each had two goals for the Mustangs.

MILTON — Karissa Landis had a pair of goals in Midd-West’s 5-0 win over Milton in a Heartland Conference field hockey game Thursday.

Landis scored late in the opening half and the lone goal of the second. Marlo Spriggle assisted on three of the goals.

Midd-West hosts Benton Friday.

COCOLAMUS — Laney Dowling scored the lone goal for East Juniata in its 7-1 loss to Susquenita in Tri-Valley League field hockey Thursday.

Dowling’s goal came in the game’s final five minutes. Bralynn Clouser assisted on it.

“The girls played good tonight. It took some time for the girls to get into the rhythm of playing, but they got into it then,” East Juniata coach Harley Straub said. “The girls had a better second half where they were more aggressive and started going to the ball a little more. We had our chances, and were able to capitalize one time.”

East Juniata (0-6, 0-3) travels to Newport Saturday.

Volleyball

Juniata Valley 3, Mount Union 0

ALEXANDRIA — Mount Union knew what to expect heading into its volleyball match against Juniata Valley, but fell 3-0, in Inter-County Conference play Thursday evening.

Juniata Valley won 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22 for the home sweep.

Morgan Brumbaugh had nine service points while Taylor Grove had 11 digs for the Trojans.

Teammates Camille Posey and Madison Harris combined for 12 kills as Kadyn Crisswell contributed with 14 assists. Tyra Hand had three aces.

“The first time we play them, it was a fantastic match,” Mount Union coach Tessa McCormick said. “Going in, we knew it was going to be a competitive game. … Overall, I was proud of how they played. They just need to be more aggressive offensively.”

Mount Union (5-5) competes in the Bellwood Invitational Saturday.

Girls soccer

Hollidaysburg 5, Mifflin County 1

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Mifflin County scored a goal in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as it fell to Hollidaysburg, 5-1, in Mid-Penn Conference girls soccer Thursday afternoon.

Sierra Shawver scored the Huskies’ lone goal.

Alyssa Bell recorded a hat trick for Hollidaysburg.

Mifflin County (3-6) hosts Juniata today.

MIDDLEBURG — Midd-West scored a team total of 382, enough for a third place finish in a Heartland Athletic Conference golf match Thursday.

Cade Crossgrove and Hunter Beward led the Mustangs, each scoring a 91 for the day.

Midd-West finish the regular season at (12-8).

District 6 sectional

ALTOONA — Mifflin County’s Bryan Chilson had his best round of the year Thursday at Sinking Valley Country Club.

But, it was also his last — Chilson’s 92 had him tied for 20th place in the District 6 Class 3A sectional, and only 10 from the section advance to the district tournament.

“While his season has come to end, he went out on a positive note, and we are expecting big things from him next season,” Mifflin County coach Aaron Bubb said.

State College won the team event with a score of 321, beating Altoona by 1 stroke.
