Sue Paterno, second from right, widow of legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and a longtime supporter of Special Olympics, is joined by, from left, McCartchey, Pyle and Maclay after a long day of competition at the state games.

It’s the dream that many Special Olympians work for all season long, a trip to compete with the best of the best in their respective sport.

This summer, Mifflin and Juniata counties were well represented by swimmers Erin Pyle, Megan Maclay and Annie McCartchey at the Summer Games in June. Pyle led the winners as she got a gold, a silver and had a fourth-place finish. Maclay won a silver, a bronze and also had a fourth-place finish, while McCartchey rounded out the strong local finish with a bronze and a fifth-place showing.
