Bearcats take rivals in the air
MOUNT UNION — Neither Mount Union or Huntingdon could establish much of a running attack, but it was the Bearcats who could live without such in a 40-0 win over the Trojans in a non-league football game Friday night.
Bearcats (1-0) quarterback Andrew Hudy proved early he was capable of extending plays and finding guys deep down the field to keep drives alive.
In the first quarter, Hudy made sure to make the most of a nice situation with the Bearcats setup at the Trojans’ 40-yard line following Andrew Miller’s interception of Quinton Posey.
He ran out of the pocket and away from the Trojans’ pressure, getting a jump pass over the line to running back Draven Zook who was running a drag route. The Bearcats needed 13 yards to move the chains, and they got 17 on that play to setup Zook with the two-yard touchdown run to cap off the drive and score the game’s first points.
The pair connected again in the third quarter with the Bearcats facing a fourth-and-26 situation for a 28-yard play to again setup a two-yard touchdown run by Ryder Kocik.
It didn’t stop there.
The two found each other again for a 27-yard touchdown pass on a nicely setup screen route.
The duo still wasn’t done tearing the Trojans’ defense apart as they found each other again on fourth down. Needing 12 yards, they got 18 and Zook again capped the drive off with a touchdown run for 15 yards.
Zook finished with 130 all-purpose yards in the game. He had three touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving — gaining 40 yards on four carries and reeling in 90 yards on four catches.
Hudy finished 8-for-15 for 193 yards to go with no interceptions and three touchdown passes.
“We started rolling him out and he took it upon himself to scramble a little bit,” Huntingdon coach Michael Hudy said. “They were bringing everybody up in the box and we took what they gave us.”
Hudy’s other touchdowns came on a 66-yard completion to a wide open Miller running the post and a pass on the run to Derrick Fultz for 21 yards — both in the second quarter.
As for Mount Union, it couldn’t put much of anything together offensively, and often times was beating itself.
The Trojans (0-1) had four fumbles — all recovered by the offense — and two interceptions.
They also couldn’t get a punt off in the third quarter to setup the Bearcats on the Trojans’ 14-yard-line.
“I think the biggest thing for us is that we’re a young team,” Mount Union coach Jamie Brumbaugh said. “I don’t know if you can see, even when we’re running the ball, but we’re making a lot of mistakes. Even our older kids — we have some seniors out here that have never played football but they’re athletes and we’re trying to get them out on the field to help us out — are inexperienced. I hope we get better as the year rolls along, but we’re just making a lot of mental mistakes.”
Posey had to face some different defensive packages all night that kept him from getting any sort of momentum. He finished 2-of-11 passing for 17 yards and one interception.
He had a 20-yard completion to Vincent Lear heading into halftime with the Bearcats playing zone and off the receivers to not to let up the explosive scoring play. His only other completion was to Klayton Willoughby in the backfield that went for a loss of three yards in the third quarter.
Ethan Carbaugh also got a shot at throwing the ball, but his only pass was interception to Chandler Lauer when the game was out of reach.
The Trojans also couldn’t sustain a consistent running game with Willoughby ending up being the team’s lead rusher with 36 yards on four carries.
Mount Union travels to Juniata Valley on Aug. 31.
