Mount Union leads softball state team

Ten local softball players — two from Mifflin County, seven from Mount Union and one from Midd-West — were recently named to the 2018 Pennsylvania Softball Coaches Association all-state team.

Seniors Hanna Kanagy and Eleana Eckley were picked from Mifflin County.

Kanagy was a force to reckon with from the circle, going 13-3 on the year. She had a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 140 strikeouts to just 35 walks. All of that was good enough for a 1.18 ERA. She finished her career with 36 wins and 205 strikeouts.

At the plate, Kanagy batted .388 with six home runs, three doubles and 18 RBIs.

Second baseman Eckley batted .426 with four doubles, a triple, home run, 17 RBIs and three stolen bases.

The two helped Mifflin County capture the District 6 Class 6A championship and qualify for states.

Mount Union has one more reason to look at this season as its best there’s no reason to not believe the Trojans can’t sustain that with six of their seven selections all being underclassmen.

Diana Roher was the lone senior selected. The catcher batted .435 with seven doubles, four triples, a home run, 18 RBIs and 28 stolen bases.

Juniors Madison Harris and McKenzie Boozel were chosen. Boozel, a designated hitter, carried the Trojans’ best batting average (.571) of the seven selections, hitting a pair of doubles, a triple and driving in 19. Harris batted .526 with eight doubles, a home run, drove in 15 and stole seven bases for the Trojans.

Second baseman Destinie Myers was the lone sophomore. She hit .410 on the year with a double, triple and 10 RBIs.

Freshmen Karrigan Woodward, Kadyn Crisswell and Morgan Brumbaugh round out Mount Union’s selections. Third baseman Woodward hit .451 with seven doubles and a home run. She drove in 19 runs and stole a pair of bases. Outfielders Krisswell and Brumbaugh each hit over .400 in their freshmen campaign. Kriswell hit .550 with seven doules and a home run. She also had double-digit RBIs (17) and stolen bases (14). Brumbaugh batted .435 with five doubles and a handful of home runs. She drove in 27 runs and stole a base.

Midd-West’s Maya Kunes rounds out the local selections. The sophomore third baseman hit .489 on the year with five doubles. She also had a pair of home runs and 15 RBIs for the Mustangs.
