Juniata County wins in opening round

Team will face Sayre in the second game

SAYRE– Juniata County defeated Montoursville 10-3 in the opening round of the Little League Section 3 junior baseball tournament, behind the strong pitching performance by Josh Bomberger.

In the second inning, Montoursville struck first. Marco Pulizzi reached via a one-out error by the third baseman before proceeding to steal second and third. Pulizzi was driven in by Ethan Stahl.

Juniata County wasted no time to tied the score at one.

With two outs, Eli Milliken drew a walk and Ben Frey was hit by the pitch. Milliken scored on a wild pitch, Josh Bomberger helped his own cause by singling in Frey to make the score 2-1.

In the third inning, Juniata County erupted for five runs. Dawson Harper singled, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Frey. He scored on a wild pitch. Jake Brackbill scored on single by Frey before Milliken walked scored on the single by Bonberger. Tyler Sherman plated Fry and Bomberger to give Juniata a 7-1 lead.

Juniata tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning. Frey doubled to the gap in left field and Bomberger followed with his own double to the gap in right field, scoring Frey. Evan Clouser followed with a single to bring in Bomberger and Logan Kehler sacrifice in Clouser.

The only trouble that Bomberger ran into occured in the sixth inning when Montoursville scored two runs on three singles by Rocco Pulizzi, Hunter Hanna and Eli Lucas to make the score 10-3 in favor of Juniata County.

Dawson Harper came in with two outs in the seventh inning to close out the game.

Josh Bomberger threw 98 pitches and gave up three runs –one unearned– on six hits, struck out three and walked one Montoursville batter.

Juniata County faces Sayre in the semifinals Thursday at Riverfront Park at 5:30 p.m.
