Smalley paces Post 287 to a win in Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. — Tyreen Smalley pitched a complete game Saturday in Elkins to lead Post 287 to a convincing 11-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast Elite. Smalley was in control on the bump and the defenseaided his effort with two double plays and an error-free performance in the field.

Smalley was backed by a 17-hit outburst by Post 287. Noah Wright led the way with a 4-for-5 game. Nick Hostetler and Smalley each had three hits. Hostetler homered in the top of the seventh inning and went small ball with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt — one of two in the third inning.

The victory snapped a difficult streak for the local team, also the defending champion in the tournament. But it would be the lone victory as the second outing for Post 287 on the final day was not successful.

Mifflin County gave the undefeated Lexington, Kentucky, Bluegrass Express all they could handle before falling 8-2 in that game.

The Express scored four unearned runs with two out in the top of the third inning and tacked on two more unearned runs in the fifth. Despite the score, Kentucky only had a one-hit advantage over Post 287, 9-8.

Max Oburn ripped three hits including two doubles for Mifflin County. He also turned in an impressive stint on the mound as he limited the Express to three hits while fanning four and not issuing a walk across four and a third innings.

Oburn finished the tournament hitting safely in all five games with a .471 average and an on base percentage of .700.

Post 287 returns to league play Tuesday when it hosts Bellefonte in a 6 p.m. start at Mifflin County High School.
