Pupo steps out of catcher gear, throws two-hitter to power Strodes Mills

LEWISTOWN — Strodes Mills’ Jaxson Pupo is noted for his hustle behind home plate.

On Friday, Strodes Mills needed him on the mound and the 15-year-old responded with a two-hit effort in a 12-3 win over Milroy in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League.

Pupo came in the the second inning with the bases loaded and no outs and Strodes Mills only a head by 2-0 margin. He started thegame behind the plate.

Pupo got the next two batters to strike out, but then Jayden Jackson and Alex Kline got back to back base hits giving Milroy a 3-2 lead. Kline had two RBIs.

After that, Pupo was in control. He retired eight in a row between the second and fifth innings. He finished with three walks and four strikeouts. Only one ball was hit in the outfield.

Strodes Mills finished with 11 hits. Connor Cherry, Strodes’ leadoff hitter, went 3-for-3, scored four times and had two RBIs.

Pupo chipped in with two hits and drove in two runs. The other big hitter for Strodes was Thomas Resignalo, who had two hits including a two-run double in the fourth when his team scored seven times. Resignalo also had an RBI single in the third that put Strodes Mills ahead for good.

Burnham 16, Belltown 6

BELLTOWN — Burnham moved into a tie for second place with a 16-6 win over Belltown in five innings. Burnham and McVeytown each have 5-1 records.

The game was played in Belltown due to wet grounds but Burnham was the home team.

Burnham used three pitchers to gain the win with Bryce Dobson getting the start and the victory. Dobson went the first two innings with his team in front 8-2. Landon Black pitched the middle innings and Rylan Bailey closed out the fifth for the victory.

The trio allowed eight hits and four Belltown players had two each: Isiah Alters, Darion Molek, Nick Goss and Frankie Pannizzo.

Burnham finished with 11 hits. Brando Souders had three with two doubles and Bailey also had two doubles. Black also finished with two hits and he also smashed a double.

Burnham’s first base man, Connor Zimmerman, started three double plays.

Lewistown 25, Reedsville 10

MILROY — Lewistown pushed its record to 4-3 with a 25-10 win over Reedsville.

Lewistown led 19-10 going into the seventh inning and then added six more runs.

The winners had 21 hits with Efrain Oliveras-Perez getting four singles. Gage Schaeffer, Drake Schaeffer and Kelly Ferguson each had three hits.

Gage Schaeffer doubled and tripled, while Drake Schaeffer added a double. One of Ferguson’s hits also was a two-bagger. Jimmy Kenepp and Gavin Ream each had two hits.

Reedsville finished with nine hits and Christopher Russell had three and Brooks Burdick had two.

The winning pitcher for Lewistown was Aaron Henry, who went the distance and had 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Cal Ripken

T&J’s 9 Lake’s 6

LEWISTOWN — T&J’s got on the hot bat of Ryan Hine leading to a 9-6 victory over Lakes in a Cal Ripken baseball game on Friday.

Hine had two hits in the game one was a home run and the other a double. Jayden King also had a two hit game while getting the win on the mound going three and two-thirds with seven strikeouts.

Deakon Schaeffer and Douglas Weaver had multiple hit games for Lake’s.

Krentzman 3, Moose 0

LEWISTOWN — Krentzman’s pitcher Xavier Smith kept the Moose bats in check in its 3-0 shutout victory on Friday.

Smith also had a two-run home run to help extend the lead.

Chris Moon had two hits for Krentzman including a double.

Grady Hoppel and Bryson Hughes both got a hit for the Moose.
