McVeytown’s season off to a good start

LEWISTOWN — McVeytown took its first step toward defending its 2017 Mifflin County Babe Ruth championship with a 23-8 win over Lewistown on Sunday.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10 run rule.

McVeytown pounded out 15 hits with Teagan Eddinger and Cole Knable each getting three. Brian Yetter, Isaac Wilson and Owen Mock each had two.

Yetter smashed a triple and drove in four runs and Eli Pennebaker also had four RBI’s.

Gage Schaeffer had two hits for Lewisown and Efrain Oliveras-Perez unloaded a two-run triple in the fourth inning.

Mock worked the first two innings and got the win.

Belleville 7, Burnham 4

BURNHAM — Belleville scored seven unaswered runs over the course of the fourth and fifth innings after trailing by four to defeat Burnham, 7-4.

Ethan Eichhorn had two sacrifice flies to knock in two of the seven runs in those two innings.

Belleville finished with nine hits.

Matt Kauffman paced the Big Valley team with three hits, while Casey Conner and Kaden Milliron each had two.

Burnham finished with eight hits as Bryce Dobson had three and Dan King had two.

Conner picked up the win in relief and Eichhorn got the save. Conner finished with eight strikeouts in three innings of work and Eichhorn had five in two innings of relief.

Beaver Springs 23, Milroy 9

MILROY — Beaver Springs nearly scored in every inning as it beat Milroy, 23-9.

The Springs had 10 hits with Hunter Wolfley and Tucker Snook each getting three. Gavin Portzline finished with two.

Snook and Preston Arbogast each had doubles.

Milroy finished with four hits as Jayden Jackson had two including a double. Hector Maldonado also doubled for Milroy.

Snook was credited with the win, and Griffen Paige closed out the game with two innings of work and five strikeouts.

Strodes Mills 14, Reedsville 8

MILROY — Strodes Mills held off Reedsville for a 14-8 win.

Cole Schlegel paced the Strodes Mills attack with four doubles. Connor Cherry finished with three hits, including a double. Thomas Resignalo also finished with two hits.

Strodes Mills had 13 hits.

Reedsville collected eight hits with Cody Bickhart, Austin Wagner and Christopher Russell each getting two. Bickhart doubled for Reedsville’s only extra-base hit.

Jaxson Pupo picked up the win, but Cherry –who was named the league’s Outstanding Pitcher in 2017 –had to come in to nail down the win with two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.

Saturday

Belleville 13, Beaver Springs 6

BEAVER SPRINGS — Belleville scored nine runs in the fifth inning to cap off an opening day win over Beaver Springs, 13-6.

The game was tied at three going into the top of the fifth when Belleville exploded for the nine runs.

The Big Valley club finished with 11 hits. Kaden Milliron led the Belleville attack with three hits. Casey Conner and Marshall Maidens each had two.

Milliron also picked up the win on the mound for Belleville in relief.

The Springs finished with 11 hits. Hunter Wolfley had three, while Brayden Swineford, Trey Wagner and Jason Kratzer each had two.

Strodes Mills 7, Milroy 4

LEWISTOWN — Four Strodes Mills pitchers limited Milroy to just three hits in a 7-4 win.

Thomas Resignalo got the victory as he worked the middle innings. Jaxson Pupo worked the seventh and got the save. Cade Penepacker started for Strodes and Cole Schlegel also worked two innings for the winners.

Pupo led the Strodes Mills hitters with three hits including a double. But the big gun for Strodes was Tyler Hunter, who had a two run triple in the second inning giving Strodes a 4-2 lead. Hunter finished with four RBI’s.

Hadyn Crum had two of the three hits for Milroy, while Hector Maldonado had the other single.

Rookie manager, Rod Henry, II picked up his first Babe Ruth win.

Burnham 17, Belltown 2

BELLTOWN — Burnham broke open a close game with eight runs in the seventh inning to beat Belltown, 17-2.

The big bat for Burnham was Rylan Bailey, who had three hits including a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Bailey finished with five RBIs including a two-run double in the seventh.

Landon Black had two hits for the winners as he smashed a double in the sixth. Dan King also was a multiple hitter with two hits.

Brando Souders and Bryce Dobson each had doubles as Burnham finished with 10 hits.

Souders got the win as he went the distance. He struck out nine and walked four. He gave up four singles.

Nick Goss had two of the four hits for Belltown.

Belltown’s Darion Molek started for Belltown and worked four innings and struck out nine.

The win was the first for Burnham manager, Mike Souders.

Lewistown 1, Reedsville 0

LEWISTOWN — Lewistown’s Efrain Oliveras-Perez started the 2018 season the way he ended the last one by beating Reedsville.

The 15-year-old pitcher has now beaten Reedsville four straight times as he opened the 64th season for Babe Ruth baseball in Mifflin County.

Oliveras-Perez went the distance as he struck out 11, walked four and gave up just one hit.

Reedsville’s lone hit came from Zach Williams, who singled in the fifth inning

Williams and Cody Bickhart combined for a one-hitter. The two struck out 14 and walked six.

Lewistown scored the only run of the game in the fifth on two walks, a wild pitch and an error.

Lewistown’s only hit came from Oliveras-Perez in the sixth.

The win was the first for Lewistown manager, Brad Wagner.
