Handful of Mustangs named stars

MIDDLEBURG — The Midd-West Mustangs scored five selections to the Heartland Athletic Conference basketball all-star game. Four were selected on the girls’ teams while one was chosen on the boys’ team.

Rachel Teats was named to the first team this year and was selected to the all-defensive team as well.

“Rachel Teats, a co-captain, did it all this year. Rachel led the team in points, rebounds, blocks, and steals. She had 10 double-doubles on the season and when she did not record one she was always very close,” Mustangs coach Lisa Wagner said. “Rachel also took the responsibility of guarding the opposing team’s best player and did a good job of shutting them down. Losing her to graduation will be extremely tough as Rachel has been an all-around threat for many seasons and a great role model to the younger kids.”

Alyssa Keister and Zoe Webb were given the honor of third team selections while Gabby Selleck was given an honorable mention.

“Alyssa Keister, the other co-captain, led the team in assists and was second in scoring,” Wagner said. “Alyssa was a workhorse for the team and made plays that would never show up in the stat sheet. She has really grown into the point guard role and has become a very dependable player, one that will be looked to next year in her senior season.

“Zoe Webb and Gabby Selleck were bright spots in the second half of the season,” Wagner continued. “Zoe provided a spark in the scoring column after the team lost a scoring threat halfway through the year while Gabby was a rebounding machine, eventually becoming the team’s second best rebounder. Both greatly improved from the beginning of the season and have bright futures.”

Samuel Brummett was the lone Mustang selected to the PHAC all-stars for the boys.

“Brummet was certainly our MVP for the year. He was consistently able to put points on the board and had an all around good knowledge of the game,” Mustangs coach Brent Bobb said. “I would contribute that to his work in the off-season. I know first hand that he put a lot of time into the game between March and November and that paid off between November and February.”
