Mount Union tops Forbes for second straight win
WATERFALL — Mount Union took control in the third quarter and never let off the gas leading to a 60-42 win over Forbes Road in a nonleague girls basketball game Friday.
“The first half we came out very slow, we were down on numbers due to injuries and illness and most were exhausted from the three other games we played this week,” Trojans coach Alix Sellers said. “We were forcing things offensively that weren’t there and letting things get through defensively. (Karrigan) Woodward was a great help keeping us alive in the first half finding openings underneath the hoop and crashing the boards.”
The Trojans were down 25-22 going into the second half as they held the Cardinals to just six points in the frame.
“After coming out from half time, I think the girls stepped up into the game,” Sellers said.
The second half became the Laiken Turner show as she scored all of her 17 points in the half. Turner was just one of four Mount Union players to score in double digits — Woodward had 15 points, Kyra Hand had 12 and Keairra Worthy had 10 for the night.
“These girls have come a long way from the beginning of the year, and I see great potential with this group of girls,” Sellers said. “Especially with the ball movement we’ve been having and players stepping up offensively and defensively as a solid team.”
The Trojans lost the JV game, 35-23. Alexis Ryan led with seven points.
