Holiday hoops, more set to be unwrapped after Christmas

The holiday season is here, and with it brings a number of tournaments that area basketball and wrestling teams will participate in.

There won’t be much down time following Christmas for three basketball teams — Mount Union’s boys and girls teams and the East Juniata girls are set to play in tournaments Tuesday and Wednesday.

Both Mount Union teams travel to Juniata College for the Hungtingdon Lions Club tournament. The two will play back-to-back with the girls playing at 5:30 p.m. and the boys tipping off at 7.

Southern Huntingdon, Huntingdon and Juniata Valley will be there for both brackets.

The girls will play Huntingdon before giving the floor over the boys who face off against Juniata Valley.

The tournament picks up the next day with the girls’ consolation game slated for 4 p.m. and championship game at 7 p.m. The boys will play its consolation game at 5:30 p.m. with the championship game set to take place at 8:30 p.m.

East Juniata will once again partake in the Angela Wolfe Royalty Memorial tournament at Selinsgrove where the Tigers tip off the tournament against Bellefonte at 6 p.m. before the home town Seals host Line Mountain.

The consolation and championship games will be played the following day at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The Juniata girls then get in on the fun when they travel to Turbotville for the Defender Booster Club tournament at Warrior Run. They open playing the nightcap against Warrior Run at 7:30 Wednesday night.

Milton and Mifflinburg will open the tournament at 6 p.m.

Play will continue Thursday with the consolation starting at 6 with the championship taking place immediately after.

Greenwood’s girls also begin tournament play Wednesday when they open the Bermudian Springs Holiday tournament against Camp Hill at 6:30 p.m.

Bermudian Springs faces Boiling Springs at 8 p.m. before play picks back up on the 28th with the consolation and championships set to take place at the same times.

Away from the courts, Midd-West will also be partaking in a two day wrestling tournament at Woodbridge, Va. from Wednesday into Thursday.

As tournament play starts to calm down Thursday, the Juniata boys basketball team will participate in the Ram Winter Jam at Penns Valley, playing Mifflinburg in the opening round at 6 p.m.

Penns Valley plays Bellefonte at 7:30 with the consolation and championship games taking place at the same time Friday night.

The Mifflin County girls will travel to Berwick for the Judy Knorr Holiday Tournament where the Huskies play Notre Dame Green Pond in the opening round at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Berwick will take on Crestwood following Mifflin County’s game and will hold consolation and championship games Friday at the same time, albeit with Elk Lake in place of Crestwood, a change forced by a late withdrawal from the field. The Huskies see Berwick Friday night with a win, or Elk lake that afternoon if they fall in the first game.

Closing out regional tournament play on Friday will be Greenwood boys basketball along with Mifflin County and Juniata wrestling.

Greenwood head to the Perry County tournament at Susquenita where it faces off against Newport at 6 p.m. before Susquenita takes on West Perry at 7:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be played at the same time Dec. 30.

Mifflin County heads to Canon-McMillan High School for the prestigious Powerade Wrestling Tournament, while Juniata wrestles at the Conestoga Valley tournament, both Dec. 29-30.
