Cambell’s goal sends JMS?to ACAA semis

BLOOMSBURG — After 60 minutes of play, someone finally found the back of the net. And that lone goal — by Juniata Mennonite’s Chloe Campbell — gave the Lions a 1-0 win in the first round of the Allegheny Christian Athletic Association girls soccer tournament, and a semifinal berth today.

Juniata Mennonite, the third-place team from the East Division, will square off against East champion Northumberland Christian, which posted a pair of wins over the Juniata County school in the regular season.

“I think we’ve gotten better since then,” Lions coach Todd Taylor said. “We’re still going to have to play a really good game.”

In some ways, his team did just that against the runner-up from the West. Against the barrage of Lion shots, Taylor said, goalie Meredith Dull made several good shots, and some of them caromed off the goal structure.

“There are four shots that could easily have gone in,” he said.

The one that did occurred midway through the second half. Anna Taylor passed the ball to Peyton Burd, who sent it to Chloe Campell in the box near the penalty kick area. Campbell finished it. It was Juniata Mennonite’s sixth shutout.

Todd Taylor said it’s helpful that his team has so many scoring threats.

“We have five or six girls that are real close to leading us in goals. It’s nice to have that spread out,” he said. But, he added, “I would have liked to see them score a little more today.”

BELLWOOD — Mount Union had two good wins against Bellwood-Antis Thursday, but combined with three close losses it added up to a 3-2 Blue Devils victory in Inter-County Conference volleyball.

It also marked the end of the season for the Trojans, who finished just below .500 with an 8-10 overall mark, 6-8 in the conference.

“It was a tough loss,” Mount Union coach Tessa McCormick said. “It wasn’t really anything they did.’

She blamed a number of unforced errors as the difference.

“For the most part we let one or two go,” she said.

A few Trojan players had strong outings, starting with Morgan Brumbaugh’s 21 service points (two of them aces). Kadyn Crisswell led in assists (22) and digs (16). Taylor Fortney delivered 18 kills, doubling the next best by Diana Roher.

Mount Union will not enter the District 6 tournament.
