Fisher takes eighth place in Hershey
HERSHEY — Christian Fisher’s day ended on the medal stand Saturday, but it wasn’t where he wanted to be.
More accurately, he wasn’t in the spot on the podium that he thought he could be in. Fisher went 3-3 on the Giant Center floor, but his wins came early, meaning he ended the season as the eighth-best wrestler in the state.
“I’m not very happy right now,” he said after his consolation final, a 6-0 loss to Kurtis Phipps, a Norwin freshman who was the Southwest region champ.
“I’ll be back better than ever next year,” he said.
Saturday morning, he faced Frankie Bonura of Moon Township, who used first and second-period takedowns to relegate Fisher to the seventh-place match in a 4-1 decision.
“The kid outwrestled me, that’s what happened,” he said matter-of-factly.
Phipps came down to the consolations after a loss to fellow region champion Andrew Cerniglia — Fisher’s first opponent — to become the second regional title winner he would face.
Fisher, making his first appearance in the state tournament, admitted nerves as the 84 contestants for placement lined the mats for the parade of champions.
“Next year, I probably won’t be as nervous. I was really nervous, especially during the parade of champions,” he said. “I just sat there and my stomach was rumbling.”
The Husky sophomore finished the season at 31-9.
