WILLIAMSPORT — Just like the placement round of the South sectional tournament a week ago, the first night of the District 4 Class 2A wrestling tournament at Williamsport was a tough one for Midd-West.

The lack of momentum from last Saturday night, when the Mustangs went 1-7 in the evening session at Southern Columbia High School, followed Midd-West to the Magic Dome and the Mustangs struggled most of the night going 4-6. Only Noah Ettinger, at 138 pounds, advanced to this morning’s semifinals.

But, A.J. Steininger (103), Kameron Kline (126), Wyatt Bassett (160), Michael Ettinger (170), Cameron Snook (182), Owen Zechman (220), and Owen Hosler (285) still have a chance to pull an Andrew Zerby — the Mustang who finished in the last qualifying spot in each postseason tournament and still reached the state tournament in Hershey — beginning this morning at 8:30 with the first round of the consolations.

Ettinger, a sophomore with a 31-8 record, enjoyed a first-round bye and then disposed of Towanda’s Cooper Mosier with an easy 6-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Ettinger will face Line Mountain’s Caleb Shaffer, who upset three-time state placewinner Mike Stuart — the top seed at 138 — with a takedown in sudden victory overtime.

Steininger pinned Tyler Dilly of Towanda in the opening round but was shutout, 6-0, by Hughesville’s Luke Gorg. Steininger will face Warrior Run’s Noah Hunt.

Kline couldn’t solve returning state placewinner Joe Klock of Benton and fell, 3-2. He’ll get Bailey Cohick of Troy. Bassett lost a wild 18-14 decision to Matt Ingrassia of Sayre and will face Cal Haladay of Southern Columbia.

Michael Ettinger pinned Mike Johnson of Towanda in the first period of his opening round match but then fell to top seeded Ed Mapes of Wyalusing, 10-4. Snook also lost to a Northern Tier wrestler, Towanda’s Joe Koss, surrendering a late takedown in a 3-2 loss. Snook will face Alec Martin of Northeast Bradford.

Zechman topped Michael Martin of Montoursville in his opener and then was pinned by Danville’s Jarrett Walters in 50 seconds. Zechman will also face a Northeast Bradford wrestler, Seth Forbes.

Hosler lost a narrow 6-4 decision to Northeast Bradford and will get Dalton Tubbs of Montoursville.

Wyalusing leads the team race with 56 points with Line Mountain in second (54.5).

There are no Friday consolations in this tournament, so no one was eliminated.
