Juniata girls to defend title

HALIFAX – Late-game heroics from Josie Swartz led the comeback for Juniata in its 2-1 win over Halifax in a Tri-Valley League girls soccer semifinal game Tuesday.

“It was quite a struggle,” Indians coach Brian Strawser said. “We just couldn’t find the back of the net. Halifax really played us hard, a lot of credit to them. We faced a lot of adversity, we just were patient and waited for our opportunities.”

The win means the Indians will have the chance to defend their crown against rival and division champion East Juniata.

Lucy Sticher scored the only goal for the Wildcats in the first half. But Juniata refused to give in as Swartz drove for the tying goal at the 63:42 mark before she scored the go-ahead goal with just minutes left in the game.

Juniata (12-6-1, 9-1-1) East Juniata Thursday at Upper Dauphin.

Girls soccer

East Juniata 4, Millersburg 0

COCOLAMUS – Thea Neimond led the way for East Juniata in its 4-0 shutout over Millersburg in a Tri-Valley League semifinal girls soccer game on Tuesday.

Neimond scored a goal in each half while Hailey Swartz had a goal along and an assist. Mariah Brubaker also scored for the Tigers.

East Juniata (11-5, 9-1), which will be the higher seed due to its division champion status, faces rival Juniata on Thursday at Upper Dauphin. The Tigers split with the Indians in the regular season, with each taking the home contest.

Boys soccer

COCOLAMUS – East Juniata punched its ticket into the Tri-Valley League final with a 3-0 victory over Millersburg in a TVL boys soccer semifinal game Tuesday.

The Tigers only scored one goal in the first half when Gabe Coder found Trent Watts. Coder scored his own in the second half; Gage Irvin scored the third goal.

East Juniata (15-1-1) travels to Upper Dauphin to face division rival Greenwood Thursday.

Greenwood 2, Lancaster Country Day 1

LANCASTER – Despite going scoreless in the second half, Greenwood was able to hold on for a 2-1 win over Lancaster Country Day in a Tri-Valley League boys soccer semifinal game Tuesday.

Tyus Yeingst gave the Wildcats their first goal. Luke Myers, who assisted on that one, adding another before the break.

With wins by East Juniata (boys and girls) and Juniata (girls), only teams west of the Susquehanna will be represented in the league’s championship games.

Matthew Lane scored for the Cougars.

Greenwood travels to Upper Dauphin for the TVL final at Thursday.
