District soccer, field hockey set to begin

The regular season for all but football came to an end Saturday, and the turnaround for this year’s postseason is a short one.

The first game of a district tournament is today.

Greenwood’s boys soccer team is the first on the field, playing in the District 3 Class A bracket. Because of the PIAA’s change in the number of classifications in all team sports, a number of brackets will be different this year. Here are the first-round matchups:

District 6

Juniata’s boys and girls soccer teams both have entered their respective Class 2A tournaments. The boys are the ninth seed in a 10-team field, and will travel to Richland Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner heads to No. 1 Everett — District 5 plays through District 6 in a number of sports — on Thursday.

The Juniata girls, also part of a 10-team field, begin in the quarterfinals against Central Cambria, at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Hollidaysburg. Juniata is the six seed; Central Cambria No. 3.

Both of the field hockey teams in the district go straight to a title game. Mifflin County is first, taking on State College in the Class 3A game at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bald Eagle Area. Belleville Mennonite and Forbes Road tangle in the Class A game, at 4 p.m. Thursday in State College.

District 4

East Juniata and Midd-West are well represented in the district, with boys and girls soccer teams and field hockey making the playoffs from both schools.

The field hockey teams will be part of a Class A doubleheader Thursday in Selinsgrove. East Juniata faces Lewisburg at 5 p.m. and Midd-West takes on Central Columbia at 7. The eight-team bracket starts at the quarterfinal level.

East Juniata’s soccer teams — both in Class A — don’t begin play until Saturday. Those games will be played at Midd-West’s Sports Boosters Park in Middleburg. The girls face Southern Columbia at 4:30 p.m. The boys play at 6:30 against either Muncy or Lourdes Regional, who play Tuesday. There are nine boys teams vying for the title, and 10 girls teams.

The Class AA bracket includes both Midd-West squads. There are eight entries in each. The girls take on Mifflinburg at 6 p.m. Thursday in Hughesville. The boys are also in Hughesville, Saturday at 6:30.

District 3

Greenwood will contend in Class A in its two fall sports, boys soccer and field hockey. The boys are seeded seventh out of 10 and will host No. 10 Halifax, a fellow Tri-Valley League team, at 7 p.m. today. The field hockey team is the No. 2 seed in a 12-team field, and will play the winner of a game between Littlestown and TVL and Perry County foe Newport on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

The Wildcats can clinch a state berth with a win in that game — five advance from the bracket.
