LEWISTOWN — It was a “dog day” afternoon Sunday as the Burnham Bulldogs made it a sweep of all three title games they were competing in on championship Sunday for the Central Keystone Football and Cheer League at legendary Mitchell Field.

“We’ve been working at this for two years. It couldn’t be any sweeter coming from the bottom last year to the top,” Burnham coach Anthony Everly said. “It doesn’t get any better.”

With the Bulldogs picking up wins in the peewee division and seeing its special needs team win that super bowl, it was up to the midgets to complete the sweep.

In the nightcap, the No. 2 Bulldogs did just that as they came out the victors of a 30-13 contest over Midd-West, the top seed in the division.

The score was not indicative of the closeness of the game as Midd-West was as close as nine points in the final 32 seconds when Burnham closed the door officially with a touchdown.

The Bulldogs’ ground game was led by Drake Schaeffer with 115 yards on the ground.

Midd-West’s Hunter Wolfley led the ground game for Midd-West as he earned everyone of his 100-plus rushing yards.

Wofley got the Mustangs on the board first when he got loose around the end and blazed his way for a 69-yard touchdown streak. The PAT was successful as they moved ahead 7-0 with 6:57 left in the first.

Burnham was not intimidated as it rallied on its next drive. On the 10th play of the drive, the Bulldogs tied the game at 7-7.

Kyler Everly followed his blockers and went in from nine yards out.

Going into the intermission, the teams remained tied.

With the first possession of the second half, Burnham came out and put its offensive plan together and started to roll down the field.

After starting the quarter at their own 34, the Bulldogs smashed their way downfield.

Facing a first-and-goal from the 10, Burnham handed the ball to Xavier Smith and he did the rest, scoring with 6:03 left in the third. The Bulldogs capped the drive with a successful two-point conversion to take the lead, 15-7.

Burnham’s defense held Midd-West scoreless the rest of the quarter and headed into the final stanza leading by that same total.

On the Bulldogs’ first possession of the final period, Dylan Long found the end zone as he rambled for 17 yards and with a successful PAT made it 22-7.

Seconds later, the Mustangs battled back into the game when Daniel Engelhart broke lose after getting through the line of scrimmage and rambled for a 60-yard touchdown.

On a crucial extra point attempt, the Bulldogs made a stand and forced the Mustangs to throw an incomplete pass on the two-point attempt, keeping it a two-possession game for the Bulldogs.

With 32 ticks left on the clock, Burnham scored one last time when Schaeffer rolled it in from five yards out, ending the game for the Mustangs and giving the win to the Bulldogs, 30-13.
