Repeat performance

MILROY – Mifflin County scored a run in every inning on Monday night as it downed Perry County, 14-4, to take the District 7 title and advance to the state tournament starting July 16 in Altoona.

It was much of the same for Mifflin County as it was in the first game, a 13-1 win on Saturday.

Perry County’s downfall was that it gave up too many walks. On Saturday, it was 12 and on Monday it was eight.

“I thought it was almost a repeat of Saturday’s game,” said Scott Reigle, the Mifflin County manager, “We got good pitching and our defense played well (no errors for the second straight game). We got some timely hits around their walks.”

The game on Monday was stopped after six innings when Jared Hannon drove in the 14th run in the bottom of the sixth with two outs.

Hannon also worked one inning on the mound as he sat down Perry County 1-2-3 in the sixth.

The winning pitcher was Drew Westover, who worked the first five innings. He gave up just two hits and all four of Perry County’s runs came in the third inning. Westover struck out five and walked three.

Ben Radonovich and Jacob McNellie had the two hits off of Westover in the third. Radonovich had a single and McNellie had a two-run double.

Mifflin County scored three in the first as Isaac Matthews doubled home a run and Max Oburn had a two-run single.

In the second, Matthews smashed his second double of the night and later scored on a wild pitch.

Oburn added another RBI to his total with a run scoring single in the third and Ty Narehood’s ground out scored another run.

Mifflin County added two more runs in the fourth making it 8-4. Hannon led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Josh Nichols knocked home the second run of the inning with a ground out.

Two lead off infield hits by Oburn and Tyreen Smalley in the fifth and a Perry County error led to another run.

Then finally in the sixth, Mifflin County scored five times to wrap up the game.

Two runs scored on an error and a passed ball. Oburn picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly and Smalley smashed a triple knocking home a run.

With two out and Smalley on third, Brody Wilson drew a walk. A passed ball sent Smalley home and Wilson to second. Hannon then hit a line drive to left field and when the Perry County left fielder trapped the ball, Wilson scored to end the game.

Notes: Reigle’s all-star coaching mark improved to 67-25. … It was Reigle’s eighth district title and that ranks him fifth on the Mifflin County coaching chart. … Matthews and Smalley each had two hits. Hannon had a great defensive play to the end the third inning as he was playing left field and ran down a foul ball and then bounced off the fence after the catch. … Mifflin County will open state play against the District 8 winner (Williamsport area) at 5 p.m. on July 16. … There was a 40-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth.
