Careers of father, son very alike
MILROY – It has been uncanny how the Babe Ruth careers of Cade Attick and his father, Donny, have been on a parallel course.
Both played for Reedsville. Donny from 1977-1979 and Cade from 2012-2014. Both of their Reedsville managers came from the same family, the Reigles. Bob Reigle coached Donny, while his son Scott coached Cade.
In 1978, Reedsville won the league title as it beat out Belleville in a league playoff. This year Cade’s Reedsville team was in the pennant race until the last day of the season when it was finally beat out by guess who, Belleville. In 1979, Donny’s Reedsville team also loss the pennant the last day of the season as it fell to Milroy.
Both of the Atticks broke in with Reedsville as second basemen and then advanced on the team as pitchers and shortstops.
In 1977 when Donny was 13-years-old, Reedsville went 14-6. It was the start of a streak that has lasted 39 years, getting double diget wins.
Last year when younger Attick was 14-years-old, it looked like the streak was in jeopardy. With only one 15-year-old returning, it looked like Reedsville was in for a long year.
Not only did the young Reedsville team get to 10 wins, but it won 14 games and had a winning season.
On the All-Star scene, Donny was a two-time All-Star (there was not a 14-year-old All-Star team until 1999). Both of his team’s finished in the state tournament’s final four, second as 13-year-olds and fourth as 15-year-olds.
Cade, who is now a three-time All-Star, has seen both of his teams finish in the final four too, fourth as a 13-year-old and as state champions in his 14-year-old year.
As a 15-year-old, Donny played in the state tournament in the Philadelphia area, Phoenixville. Last summer, Cade and his teammates won the title in the Philly area, Wrightstown (Bucks County).
And now comes this year. When Donny was 13-years-old, the state tournament was held on two fields, Drums and Drifton, which are located outsdie of Hazleton.
The 2014, state tournament is taking place in all of places, Drums.
When Donny was 13-years-old, one of his assistant coaches was Fred Zook. This year’s 15-year-old team is managed by Zook.
It was in 1977 that Mifflin County fell to Phoenixville in the 13-year-old state finals, 10-2. Both of the Atticks (Donny is an assistant coach) on the team are hopeing that this is where the parallel goes a bit uneven as they hope Mifflin County can win another state title.
