MC wins 11-8 in W.Va

From staff reports

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Mifflin County American Legion team made the long trip to West Virginia for the first round of the Elkins tournament on Thursday, and walked away happy with an 11-8 win over a team out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

With 14 hits in the win, Mifflin County recovered well after getting three-hit by DuBois earlier in the week, but the game was about more than just offense. Catcher John Michael Maclay was absent from the tournament because he will compete in today’s Lezzer Lumber Classic, but his younger brother Isaac had no trouble filling in.

Isaac Maclay had a grandslam in the seven-run first inning, threw out two attempted steals apiece at second and third and made a putout at home on a fifth attempted steal to round out his day.

Along with Maclay, Shane Connahan and Isaac Strohecker jacked one out of the park.

Max Remy had a double and Heath Hidlay went 3-for-4 along with earning the save from the mound.

“Pennsylvania Legion teams use wooden bats, but the other teams in the tournament aren’t held to that. It was not a disadvantage today,” Mifflin County coach Bernie Howard said.

Mifflin County used five pitchers in the contest, and Tyler Powell earned the win.

Today, Mifflin County has back-to-back games with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Severna Park, Md. followed by a 7 p.m. game against the host from Elkins, W.Va.
