MC tennis reaches 2nd round, drops out
From staff reports
ALTOONA – The first round of the District 6 Class AAA doubles tennis tournament belonged to the Huskies Friday, as No. 1 team Alana Felton and Emily Hurlburt and No. 2 team Kate Hugendubler and Jessa Wright both cruised past their opponents to advance to the second round.
But that was where the Huskies saw the season end.
Felton and Hurlburt came up against Altoona’s No. 1 team and lost in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Hugendubler and Wright were able to win some games against the Little Lions in their second-round match, but ultimately the State College No. 1 team forced the Huskies out of the tournament, 6-3, 6-1.
“Both teams played pretty well, but again, they’re playing against some veteran players,” said Mifflin County coach Glenn Kyle, who thought his team’s youth was a factor in Friday’s outcome.
In the first round, Felton and Hurlburt defeated Central Mountain’s No. 2 team, 6-3, 6-1 while Hugendubler and Wright topped Central Mountain’s No. 1 team, 6-1, 6-2.
Juniata Mennonite 5, Bloomsburg Christian 1
BLOOMSBURG – Juniata Mennonite traveled out of its conference with a trip to Bloomsburg Christian Friday, and it was worth the trip.
The Lions came away with a 5-1 boys soccer win.
Tony Gehman and Adrian Martin both picked up two goals for the Lions, and James Fuller filled in with the last goal as Juniata Mennonite outpaced Bloomsburg in both shots (19-7) and corner kicks (5-2).
Juniata Mennonite (11-6, 7-5) has completed the regular season and will now advance to the Allegheny Christian Athletic Association playoffs beginning Thursday.
