Calvary proves too much for MCCA

SHINDLE – Monday afternoon was a quiet one for the Mifflin County Christian girls soccer team, which saw its season end in a 6-1 loss to Calvary Christian of Huntingdon at the Eagle’s home field.

Despite a first half that had Calvary outshooting the Eagles by a 10-2 margin, Mifflin County’s defense stiffened in the second half – reducing the shots to five for its opponent but failing to match the Conquerors offensive output.

Leading the way for the Mifflin County Christian Academy was Julee Hoffman, scored the team’s lone goal in the loss.

The Eagles’ goalkeeper, Johanna Hoffman, finished with six saves.

“The girls played but they are a lot younger than the guys are so they took some rough lumps this year to start,” Mifflin County Christian assistant coach Shane Harpster said. “Our two seniors, Julee (Hoffman) and Krista (Groff), they work hard and they just have to play all over the field. Unfortunately we played a pretty tough team tonight. Hopefully, some of these girls can learn from it.”

In the first half, Calvary picked up its first goal from Dani Marsbarger at the 27:15 mark of the first half.

Less than five minutes later, Rosie Andrew’s unassisted goal with 22:28 showing on the clock put the visitors up 2-0.

Calvary was far from done as it picked up two more goals before the first half was completed.

Julia Snare from picked up a pass from Marsbarger with 16:48 left until intermssion and then Erin Kilian rounded out the scoring at the 5:25 mark, taking a 4-0 lead into halftime.

Mifflin County Christian’s lone highlight of the afternoon came from Julee Hoffman as she caught the Calvary goalie leaning the wrong way and sent one home, cutting the lead to 4-1.

With the Eagles goal, the Mifflin County offense came to life and started to challenge the tempo and get its transition game going.

However, Kilian and company dashed any comback attempts by Mifflin County when she hit her second goal of the game with 21:01 left.

Teammate Haylee Zimmerman capped the night for Calvary with a late goal with 9:03 left to put the icing on the cake.
