Diamond trivia fills in on rainy days
When it rains and baseball games are moved to another day, there isn’t much to do except write about diamond trivia.
Recently, Strodes Mills’ manager, Butch Larson, managed in his 100th Babe Ruth game. He became the fifth manager from Strodes Mills and 23rd manager in the history of the Mifflin County league to accomplish that feat.
Other Strodes Mills managers to get over 100 games were Dale Pollock (380), Larry Wolfe (137), Chris Flanagan (128) and Gary Ciecierski (100). Three of the managers coached Mifflin County all-star teams, Pollock, Wolfe and Ciecierski. Pollock was also the manager for Lewistown East for two years.
Mifflin County Babe Ruth schedules 135 games in the regular season and has 33 games remaining.
This has not been a good season for Belleville when traveling to Lewistown’s Rec Park. In two games against Lewistown and Strodes Mills, the boys from Big Valley have one hit and haven’t scored a run. The last run Belleville scored at Rec Park came June 21, 2012, when Belleville scored a run in the sixth inning to beat the West, 2-1, and snapped the West’s 47-game winning streak.
The three longest winning streaks in Babe Ruth this season belong to the two top teams. Lewistown (20-1) had a 12-game winning streak and currently has an eight-game one, while Yeagertown (16-5) had a nine-game winning streak. Yeagertown stopped the West streak on May 20 with a 10-9 win in eight innings. Yeagertown’s streak was stopped by Strodes Mills, 13-3, on May 27.
Thirty one players from Pennsylvania were selected in the recent Major League amateur draft. Five of those draft picks were high school seniors including Seth Wagner from Mifflin County, who was taken in the 39th round by the Minnesota Twins. The Twins also drafted another high school pitcher, A.J. Bogucki, Boyertown, 31st round and a college pitcher, Ethan Mildren, 12th round, University of Pittsburgh.
The top pick out of Pennsylvania came from Somerset, Ian Stiffler, who was the 223rd overall pick and went in the seventh round to the Atlanta Braves. As a sophomore in 2011, Stiffler pitched in the District 6 Class AAA final against Indian Valley, beating the Warriors for the title.
On Wednesday, Milroy took a double header from Reedsville in Babe Ruth play. The last time Milroy won a double header was on June 10, 2008 when it beat Strodes Mills and Burnham. The last time Reedsville dropped two games in the same day was on June 27, 2003 to Lewistown (West).
