Heeter only Mustang in tournament winner’s bracket

WILLIAMSPORT – Three of four Midd-West wrestlers followed the school’s colors of black and blue Friday night in the Northeast Class AA Regional at Williamsport High gym.
Only senior Zach Heeter at 145 pounds managed to get through to this morning’s semifinals. The other three Mustangs, Corey Stauffer at 106, Tanner Ebright at 126 and Alex Lieberman at 170 lost in the quarterfinals.
Heeter, a senior with a 35-5 mark, dispatched the second seed, Western Wayne’s Manny Mirailh, 10-3. Heeter catches Williamson’s Billy Barnes (34-1) in this morning’s semifinals.
The remaining three Mustangs must battle back through the consolations to finish third and earn a trip to next weekend’s state tournament in Hershey.
Stauffer’s effort against District 4 champion ZacK LeBarron of Warrior Run was much different from his 11-9 loss to the defender last week. LeBarron controlled the bout, winning by fall in 3:45.
Ebright fell by technical fall 16-0, 5:47 to Wyoming Area’s Andrew Schutz.
Lieberman, the District 4 champion, fell behind South Williamsport’s Justin Knee, the fourth-place finisher out of District 4. The key move was a reversal in the second period that gave Knee the lead.
“It wasn’t the best night for us. But Zach Heeter looked pretty good for us,” Midd-West coach Clint Swartz said. “Tomorrow will be another day.”
Of Lieberman’s loss, Swartz said, “It was just one of those things that happens. We’ll come back tomorrow.”
Swartz said Lieberman, a junior, and Knee had never wrestled each other.
