Three Mustangs to semis

WILLIAMSPORT – Corey Stauffer now has a two-match winning streak.

That’s not bad when you consider he was 33-1 coming into Friday night’s District 4 Class AA wrestlling championships at Williamsport High.

Stauffer, who was runner-up last week in the Southern section, opened with a pin over Trystan Johnson of Central Columbia and followed that with a 14-5 major decision over Northern section champion Kyle Blaschak.

Those two wins shot the Midd-West sophomore into this morning’s semifinal, where he’ll meet unbeaten Zack LeBarron (30-0) of Warrior Run.

Stauffer joins two teammates in the semis – Zach Heeter advanced at 145 as did Alex Lieberman at 170. Heeter faces the most daunting task, taking on three-time state medalist Colt Cotton of Benton. Lieberman, second seeded, also faces a Benton wrestler, Brandon Lontz. Lontz was the East section champion.

Two other Mustangs fell Friday night and are in this morning’s elimination round: Tanner Ebright at 126, and Dylan Hain at 138 pounds.

It was a big win for Stauffer after last weekend’s loss.

“It was tough loss. I got over it pretty quick,” Stauffer said. “I had keep my head up if I wanted to stay in it.”

On the other side of the brackets, Lewisburg freshman Brian Friery beat Cameron Newman of Line Mountain by 9-4. It didn’t surprise Stauffer.

“It surprised me a little bit. Both of those guys are good wrestlers,” he said.

Stauffer, who beat Friery 5-2 in last weekend’s sectional, said he’d be happy to be in tonight’s final against the Lewisburg wrestler.
