DANVILLE - James Richard "Dick" Bender, 78, formerly of Middleburg, passed away at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born on April 21, 1936, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Foster and Hazel (Hile) Bender.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Denny Bender, and one sister, Doris McMonigle.
Dick is survived by: his daughters, Tammi Bender and husband, Kevin Wallace, of Delmar, Md., Tracy Bell and husband, Raymond, of Lewistown, and Shana Bowersox and husband, Butch, of Milroy; six grandchildren, Justin, Travis, Nathan, Britney, Drew and Kevin; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Liam, Kolby and Maddox; and a brother, Fred Bender, of Elizabethtown.
Dick was a 1956 graduate of Lewistown High School and served in the Army National Guard for 21 years.
He was a manager and bartender of the VFW in Middleburg for 32 years.
He was a Lutheran by faith and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Dick was such a joy to be around and a light shined from his soul. He had a passionate love for children and animals. He loved to give gifts and see the joy it brought to his friends and family. He loved the Lord with all his heart and soul.
His family appreciates the loving care he received from Home Nursing Agency, PRN and staff at Geisinger Medical Center. The family would like to extend special thanks to all who helped out in this difficult time.
A memorial service with VFW honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Inc., Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John Walters officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Interment will take place at a later date at Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery in East Hanover.
