William D. Davis Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - William D. Davis Sr., 83, of Williamsport, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ Wednesday, June 4, 2014. He passed away beside a trout stream while fishing.

Born, May 13, 1931, in Yeagertown, he was the son of the late William S. Davis and Freida (Nevel) Davis.

On Feb. 26, 1955, he married Joyce Goss Davis, who survives. Together they celebrated 59 years of marriage.

William was a graduate of Yeagertown High School, Penn State University and University of Wisconsin graduate school of banking.

He was the retired chairman of the former Commonwealth Bank. He also was a director of CoreStates Bank, N.A. He served in various leadership roles in the banking industry trade associations including the Pennsylvania Bankers Association. In 1995, he was elected a director of the National Association of Corporate Directors and appointed to the Board of the PA Economic Development Financing Authority. He had a 38 year career in banking.

He was a Korean War veteran (a staff sergeant), having served in the U.S. Army's 45th and 24th Division.

He was a past director of the following organizations: Williamsport- Lycoming Foundation, the Lycoming Foundation, the Pennsylvania College of Technology, the PA Economy League's Central PA regional board and the local Williamsport board, Pennsylvania Enterprises Inc., Higher Dimension Medical Inc., the Williamsport Municipal Authority and Williamsport Wirerope Works Inc.

Bill had a strong dedication to serving his community. He was recognized for his local leadership when he received the 1988 Brotherhood Citation Award, and the Lycoming United Way award. In 1992, he was awarded the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Susquehanna Council of Boy Scouts America and in 1995 he received the Outstanding Citizen Award of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

He was past chairman of the Board of Directors of the Williamsport Salvation Army and chairman of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. He was past director of the Christian Business Men's Committee of Williamsport, Lycoming United Way, Loyalsock Kiwanis Club and Junior Achievement Lycoming/William- sport chapter. He was a supporter of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra.

He and his wife, Joyce, established a scholarship endowment for students who attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology. He was active in many fund raising events in the Williamsport area.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Williamsport, the Williamsport Country Club, Red Fox Hunting and Fishing Club and Texas Block House Hunting and Fishing Club. He was a past member of the Executive Committee of the Lycoming County Republican Committee. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, golf and antiques.

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by: his children, William Jr. (Norene) Davis, of Muncy, Susan (Angelo) Hassig, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Gregory (Linda) Davis, of Williamsport, and Rebecca (Jeff) Baker, of Williamsport; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Jesse (Patricia) Davis, of Lewistown, Harold (Lucille) Davis, of Muncy, Saundra (Gary) Showers, of Yeagertown, and Patricia (Richard) Erhard, of Yeagertown. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, at Ross and Parker streets, Williamsport.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, at the church.
