BEAVER SPRINGS - The theme for the 10th annual Midd-West Relay for Life, which will be held June 20 and 21, is "Run For Your Life: De-Feet Cancer."
In keeping with the theme, the event will feature a 5K, a 10K and a half-mile Fun Run/Walk for kids and kids at heart.
Midd-West Relay For Life Chairwoman Ange Keiser said the theme was chosen because Danielle Fetterolf, one of the youth involved in the event, suggested the 5K..
"The theme was chosen because we wanted to have fitness-based activities at the Relay," Keiser said. "It was an overwhelming vote to choose that theme and the activity."
The 24-hour event will begin with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 20 at the Beaver Fairgrounds in Beaver Springs, with a fundraising goal of $43,900.
The survivor ceremony, including an introduction to the Honorary Chairs Rick Soles, Betty Drumheller and Clayton Smeltz, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with a survivors' lap at 6 p.m. This lap is a time to celebrate victories achieved over cancer.
"The survivors' dinner is part of the survivor celebration," Keiser said, explaining how the survivors gather for a meal after the survivor ceremony.
The fight back ceremony begins at 8 p.m. and the luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. It is a time to honor people who have been touched by cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the disease. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each bearing the name of a person affected by cancer.
A variety of entertainment will perform throughout the event, including local talent, and a variety of food stands will be available.
"Our Relay has a very festive, carnival-like atmosphere and we certainly have a wide array of food choices," Keiser said. "And we have continuous stage entertainment - not overnight, but from 4 to 11 p.m. on Friday we will have somebody on the stage performing and then all day Saturday, from morning to end."
Chinese auction tickets will be sold from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 20 and until 2 p.m. on June 21, when the winning tickets will be drawn.
A public breakfast buffet will be held from 6 to 10:30 a.m. on June 21 in the Memorial Building, compliments of the Busy Beavers team. Heather Sellers will host Zumba from 8 to 9 a.m.
The 5K, 10K and half-mile Fun Run/Walk will be held on June 21. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The races begin at 9 a.m. and the run/walk begins at 10 a.m.
A basket auction will begin at noon on June 21. A signature quilt will be up for auction at this time as well. The queen-sized quilt was designed by Paulette Ax and was quilted by Paulette's Quilt Shop on Red Bank Road in Middleburg using Relay For Life T-shirts. Those attending should bring chairs if they want to sit.
Raffle tickets will be available for a 2002 Mustang Fastback, which will be on display for a time during the event.
Children's activities include a scavenger hunt at 7 p.m. on June 20 for children ages 5 to 15. On June 21, the Kid Relay Olympics will begin at 10 a.m. on the West Snyder Elementary School baseball field. A puppet show will be performed at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. on June 21. Bounce houses and other children's games will also be available.
