MIFFLINTOWN - You can find 4-H and FFA projects exhibited at the Juniata County Fair in September, but the real competition and project completion happens in July at the Juniata County Youth Fair. Juniata County 4-H and FFA members will again exhibit their 2014 projects at the youth fair beginning July 28.
For many years, 4-H youth members exhibited their projects at individual Club Roundup meetings during the summer. Extension staff served as judges and ribbons were awarded. The late George Settlemyer, former Juniata County extension agent, in cooperation with the Juniata County Agricultural Society, made plans for youth to bring their projects to the fairgrounds for a countywide roundup and judging. This event continues today at the Port Royal Fairgrounds as the Juniata County Youth Fair.
Local food vendors make up the midway, and you won't find carnival rides, but what this fair lacks in size, it makes up for in exhibits and family fun. 4-H families and exhibitors arrive early each fair day and spend many hours preparing for animal shows, floral hall judging and good old-fashioned fun and fellowship.
In addition to competition and awards, 4-H and FFA youth participate in a variety of events at the youth fair. Barnyard games, supreme showmanship contest and 4-H/FFA Bake-off are a hit with the youth.
The public is encouraged to attend the youth fair and support the Juniata County youth exhibitors. Each year the 4-H Dairy Club provides ice cream sundaes, and the Juniata County Dairy Promotion Committee serves them.
The annual livestock sale is a crowd pleaser. The sale order changes each year. This year's livestock sale order is: market rabbits, market poultry, quilt, market steers, milk, market hogs, market goats, dairy market feeders and market lambs.
The Youth Fair Committee is busy planning this year's fair and the favorite events are sure to be included. Juniata County Youth hope to see you at the fair.
