LEWISTOWN - The Jewish holiday of Shavouth, the Festival of Weeks, commences on the evening of June 3 and concludes on the evening of June 5.
According to a press release from Ohev Shalom Synagogue, Shavouth is the second of three major festivals with both agricultural and historical significance. Agriculturally, it commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the temple. Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.
No services will be held in Lewistown this year. However, Yiskor will be recited on June 5 at services elsewhere.
