Allison wins title at Eastern Nationals
SALISBURY, Md. - Nic Allison's gold-medal finish at 58 pounds in the junior division was tops among five placewiners from Mifflin County at the MAWA Eastern Nationals wrestling tournament.
Hunter Johnson was a runner-up in the midget division at 55 pounds.
There was one fifth-place wrestler, Blake Aumiller at 60 pounds in the bantam division. Sixth-place finishers were Christian Fisher (intermediate, 76) and Trey Kibe (junior, 91), along with one wrestler from Juniata County, Taylor Smith (midget, 50).
Also competing but not placing was Mifflin County's Colby Seiler.
Hidlay wins Greco Roman title
EAST STROUDSBURG - Hayden Hidlay captured the Junior 145-pound title in Greco-Roman at the Phil Portuese North East Regional Wrestling Championship at East Stroudsburg University. He scored technical falls over Jay Oakes (N.Y.), 21-10; Andrew Nicosia (N.Y.), 10-0; and Austin Riggs (Va.), 10-0. The title qualifies Hidlay for the ASICS Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D., to be held in July.
He also qualified for Freestyle by going 5-1, losing one technical fall, 10-0, to Joey McKenna (N.J.), currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, but came back to earn third place by defeating, also by technical fall (11-0) 2014 Class AA PIAA champion Ian Brown of Hanover.
Another Husky sophomore, Brandon Wilson, earned fifth place in the Cadet division at 170 pounds in the Freestyle competition with tech falls over Justin Stacey (Maine) and Anthony Circosta (Conn.) before falling by a 14-3 margin in the semifinals to Jared Siegrist (Pa.). Brady Daniel (N.Y.) defeated Wilson 15-14 in the consolation semis but Wilson rallied for a 10-8 victory over Joe Eiden (N.Y.) to place fifth.
Treaster on all-PSAC softball first team
GREENSBURG - Dani Treaster, a graduate of Indian Valley High School, was among the top players from Seton Hill in the school's first season of PSAC play.
Treaster was named a first-team all-PSAC West selection. She finished her junior season with a .357 average out of the leadoff spot. She tied for the team lead in hits with 51 and stolen bases with 12. She scored 29 runs and added 4 doubles and 1 triple and drove in 5 runs.
Byler to play soccer at Hesston
HESSTON, Kan. - Austin Byler, a center midfielder from Belleville (Pa.) Mennonite School, will play soccer at Hesston College in the fall, the school announced.
A two-time captain for the BMS soccer team, Byler tallied 17 goals and 23 assists during his career. He helped BMS reach the district final in 2012. The BMS salutatorian is the son of Steve and Juanita Byler.
Lewistown's Randall a Raider captain
SHIPPENSBURG - The Shippensburg University football team elected three of its seniors to be the captains of 2014 Red Raider squad, including offensive lineman Doug Randall, a Lewistown Area High School graduate.
The selections were voted on by the team and made official the day before Shippensburg's Red-White game on April 12.
Randall has been a versatile three-year regular along the offensive line for the Red Raiders, working primarily as a right tackle last season. He has worked in all 35 of Shippensburg's games from 2011-13, including 18 consecutive starts through the end of the 2013 campaign. His flexibility has allowed him to play tackle, guard and center during his career.
Woods is named MVP in two sports
HUNTINGDON - Juniata College named Mount Union graduate Katrina Woods MVP in both cross country and track and field for her senior year.
In the fall, she was Landmark Women's Performer of the Year, first-team all-Landmark Conference, won the Landmark Conference Championship 6k race and was twice Landmark Conference Runner of the Week. She placed in the top 40 at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet. She also has been a steady contributor to the spring squad with her distance running.
