To the editor:
The Mifflin County Farm Bureau has hosted our Measure the Candidates Night for more than 30 years. We need to make arrangements before we even know which candidates are running for office. We have already made arrangements to use the Mifflin County High School auditorium on May 8.
This year we only have one contested race in the primary election. This is the race for the 81st Legislative District. This race is between the incumbent Mike Fleck and his opponent Richard S. Irvin, the current Huntingdon County Treasurer.
Most of the 81st District is in Huntingdon County, and only a small portion in Mifflin County. The Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce also selected May 8 as the date for their forum for these two candidates and possibly other elected offices. Therefore, the Mifflin County Farm Bureau has decided to cancel our primary Measure the Candidates Night.
We will plan for a general election Measure the Candidates Night. However, we only have one contested race for the general election. That race is for the 10th Congressional District. The current incumbent Republican Tom Marino will be opposed by Democrat Scott Brion. In the past we have sometimes had trouble getting a seated U.S. Representative to attend our event. If we cannot get both candidates to attend our general election event we probably will cancel that also. That decision has not been made. We plan to have both events next year no matter what may happen this year.
As you vote this year you may notice some changes due to redistricting. Mifflin County will be represented solely by state Sen. Jake Corman. Sen. John Eichelberger will not appear on the Mifflin County ballot.. We still have the same three state Representatives, Mike Fleck, Adam Harris and Kerry Benninghoff. However, your municipality may have a different state representative than you have had in the past.
