Doris A. Bender

MIFFLIN - Doris A. Bender, 80, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, and formerly of Mifflintown, died at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the village.

Born on May 28, 1933, in Mifflintown, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Glen H. and Della E. (Palm) Bender.

She is survived by a brother, Robert G. Bender and his wife, Annabelle, of Mifflintown, and by several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Betty L. Finnicum, preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2006.

Miss Bender was a 1951 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. She was an active member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, on the mission committee and the kitchen committee. She also attended the Four Seasons Senior Center, Mifflintown.

In earlier life, she was employed as a waitress at Milliken's Restaurant. She was then employed by her sister, Betty, at Ebright's Restaurant, and then she worked at Hoagie George Cossach's Restaurant, all of Mifflintown. After waitressing, she started a career as a seamstress, working at L. Shellenberger's, McAlisterville, then Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown, before retiring from Lyons Fashions, Mifflintown.

Doris loved her cats and had a gift of artistry. She enjoyed doing crafts and crocheting. She was also an ardent Penn State football and Philadelphia Phillies fan.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. James B. Wooster Jr. officiating. Interment will be held after the service in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at the funeral home.
