LEWISTOWN - The Lewistown Police Department is investigating an accident that occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of S. Main Street and Charles Street, which involved one vehicle that subsequently struck five other vehicles, according to a report from police.
Police said the investigation revealed that the accident started when a vehicle being driven by Jerry Lee Hetrick, 52, of Derry Township, was traveling south on Main Street approaching Charles Street, when he went through the red light, and crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic and hit three vehicles that were stopped waiting for the red light facing northbound.
According to the report, the three drivers were identified as William Sanchez-Velez, of Lewistown, Tina Pinelli, of Mifflintown, and Darla Koontz, of Lewistown. Police said after Hetrick hit the three vehicles, he backed up his vehicle through the intersection, going west on Charles, when it hit another vehicle in the road, being operated by William Chatmon, of Tyrone.
According to the report, after hitting Chatmon on Charles Street, Hetrick then accelerated going west and crossed over Main Street, jumped the curb and traveled onto a barbecue business' property, and hit a truck parked on the property, belonging to Danny Baitsell Jr.
Hetrick, Koontz, and Chatmon were transported to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital by Fame EMS, the report states. Police said the investigation is continuing into the cause of the accident. Police were assisted at the scene by Brooklyn Hose, City Hook and Ladder and United Fire companies along with fire police officers.
