Maddie Rutherford, left, of Mifflin County High School, and Kathy Hartley, of the Mifflin County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, sort books Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Lewistown for the Santa’s Bookbag program. The program gathers, cleans and sorts hundreds of slighty used children’s books and then gives them to children in conjunction with the Giving Tree program for Christmas. This year, nearly 600 children will receive one new and several used books. Area residents who prefer to give a monetary donation can mail it to The Sentinel, c/o Santa’s Bookbag, P.O. Box 588, Lewistown, PA 17044. The donations will be used to purchase new books for next year’s program.
