LEWISTOWN - The Lewistown Police Department received a grant from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, but the grant cannot be processed until after the federal government shutdown is resolved, Chief William Herkert said.
Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., announced Friday that the police department will receive a $125,000 grant to hire, rehire, or retain one police officer, according to a release from the senator's office. The release also said, Casey has continually pushed Congress to add more funds to the C.O.P.S. program which allows local police departments to hire, rehire or retain police officers in their departments.
"This grant will help Lewistown to continue to keep residents safe," Casey said in the release. "The C.O.P.S. program has proven effective in helping communities across Pennsylvania. I will continue to urge Congress to increase funding for the program so that our municipalities can continue to work on advancing public safety."
