UPPER PAXTON - After a discouraging 0-3 start to the season Aug. 15, the East Juniata golf team rebounded Wednesday for a first place finish at Lykens Valley Golf Course, edging Tri-Valley League opponent Newport in a sudden death round for the top spot.
East Juniata coach Mike Zendt said his team was carried by leaders Jeremy Pannebaker and Grant Leonard in regulation, and then after a tie with Newport at 363, the Tigers' 21 strokes to Newport's 23 in sudden death sealed the victory.
"I think the Tri-Valley League is pretty much wide open. I think any team on any given day can win," Zendt said, explaining that the team's turnaround from an 0-3 start to a 3-3 record was evidence to the fact.
Pannebaker medaled with a 79 while Leonard followed with an 83. Teammates Justin Mingle and Chas Maguire carded 96 and 105 respectively.
East Juniata (3-3, 3-3) gets back in action today with a trip to host Lancaster Country Day at the Conestoga Country Club.

WILLIAMSPORT - The Midd-West golf team landed third out of six Heartland Conference teams Wednesday at the White Deer Challenge Golf Course with its 363 team score, but was far behind leader Shikellamy's 325.
The Mustangs were paced by Asher Marks, whose 84 placed him at 12-over par. Teammates Aiden Edmiston and Eli Stem both carded a 92 while Ryan Kerstetter followed close behind with a 95.
Shikellamy's C.J. Tyler was the only golfer below par (72) as he carded a 68.
Midd-West (5-5, 5-5) will play host to its Heartland Conference opponents Tuesday at the Shade Mountain Golf Club.
Mifflin County 2
MECHANICSBURG - Something looked familiar about the Mifflin County tennis team's match with Mid-Penn Conference opponent Mechanicsburg on Wednesday, and not in a way the Huskies wanted.
Mifflin County suffered a 3-2 loss to the Wildcats, which was the exact same score as the Huskies' season-opening loss to Palmyra Monday.
In another mirror image with Monday's match, Emily Hurlburt picked up the sole singles win, while Jessa Wright and Kate Arnold won one for the doubles. Hurlburt won her match over Joanna Walters in dominated fashion, preventing the Wildcat from winning a single game, 6-0, 6-0. Wright and Arnold finished close behind as they dropped Cheyenne Camp and Amanda Banzhoff, 6-1, 6-1.
Mifflin County (0-2, 0-2) gets back in action Friday when it travels to East Pennsboro to face Gettysburg.
