From staff reports
MEXICO- This year marks the 117th year of church meetings held at Island Grove Campground in Mexico.
Over 100 years ago, a typical day at camp started with the first bell ringing at 6 a.m., followed by morning worship, praise and prayer. Though the days start later now and have a lighter schedule, the focus remains on God and His glory.
Camp meetings are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Island Grove Campground. Camp is set to open with its annual communion service. Randy Traxler, of Lake Park United Methodist Church in Lewistown, will serve as worship leader, and Rev. Marsha Bookhamer, of East Waterford, will serve as speaker.
Mission Night will be held Aug. 3, and Nancy Lerch, of Grace United Methodist Church in Lewistown, will be speaking. She and her husband, Ed, have led numerous mission trips to Costa Rica. Randy Traxler will lead worship.
Campers are encouraged to attend surrounding community churches for morning worship on Aug. 4. The camp will host a children's fun fair and ice cream social at 2 p.m., which will be open to the public.
The Rev. Chuck Sprenkle, of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Manchester, will preach at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4 to 9 at the campground. Sprenkle has been in the ministry for over 30 years.
Monday through Friday, the day will begin with church bells at 9:30 a.m. Bible study will be held in the Boarding House at 10 a.m., children will meet in the Tabernacle and youth will meet in the middle of the grounds.
After evening services, light refreshments will be served for a minimal fee at the Boarding House.
