Eight trees were planted Friday morning in front of the Juniata County Courthouse in Mifflintown. They were paid for by Alan and Ellen Chack, of Fermanagh Township, in a project they initiated, along with a committee of at least 12 people. County Commissioner Teresa O’Neal said the planting project was an ‘excellent’ example of residents coming together to share their individual talents and knowledge to improve the community. On Lemon Street, two serviceberry trees were planted; two swamp white oak and two red bud trees were placed along Main Street; and two cherry trees were planted along Bridge Street. ‘It’s a living gift,’ Alan Chack said. He and his wife have vowed to cover the entire cost of the planting and already have given $2,000 for the project.
