MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. - Arthur Landis Smith, of McAlisterville, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the home of his daughter, in Merritt Island, Fla.
Arthur was born in McAlisterville on Nov. 25, 1917, the son of the late Banks and Myrtle (Landis) Smith. Arthur worked as a farmer, sawmill operator and trucker and often told stories of logging and farming with horses and mules. He loved to travel and was able to visit most of the states as well as Canada and British Columbia.
Arthur was preceded in death by: his wife, Elsie, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1938; his brother, Raymond; and his eldest daughter, Sandra.
He is survived by: his two sisters, Mary Parker Ellis, of Enterprise, Ala., and Miriam Wetzel and her husband, Lew, of Casco, Maine; and a sister-in-law, Faye Smith of McAlisterville. He is also survived by his children, Roy Smith and his wife, Nancy, of McAlisterville, Jack Smith, of Thompsontown, Phyllis Atkinson and husband, John, of Merritt Island, Fla., and Wanda Althouse and husband, Jim, of McAlisterville; 10 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.
Arthur loved children and spending time with great-grandsons, Hudson and Noah Stong, as well as Florida friends, Sabrina and Ethan Iverson, who brought great joy to him in his later years.
Arthur was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and attended Georgianna United Methodist Church while wintering in Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at St. John's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville, with the Rev. Candace Arnold officiating. There will be no viewing but a closed- casket visitation will be held for family and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
